Strokes and Technique
Hey pingskills
Three quick questions. With the backhand sidespin serve, some people start with the raquet under their non playing arm, while some over their shoulder. Which is better if there is any difference at all?
Second Question. short serves are returned in two different ways, push or flick. Topspin should be flicked, backspin pushed. But what about no spin. If the serve is really low it is hard to flick and pushes are often returned high. How should I return these serve.
Last Question. How long does it take to get 100% used to completely new equipment, Different rubbers and a different blade? Still inverted, so not changing the type of rubber though.
Thanks
Hi Tevia,
Firstly, whether you have you arm over or under is a matter of preference. Try both ways and see which feels more comfortable. I find having my bat hand under gives me a bit more freedom to swing.
For short no spin serves, try flicking first. If that doesn't work for you, have a try at short pushing. This can be difficult but it needs good touch. It is something that can be improved with training.
For a new bat, you should allow yourself at least 2 weeks or 6 sessions. You need to adjust firstly by doing a lot of general hitting. Then short pushing for touch. Then progress to pushing and serving and returning serve.
You then need to play a lot of points because this is where the differences really show up. In a match you tend to revert to what comes naturally especially with the short touch play and serving and returning of serve. Do as much of this as you can. Allow yourself time.
