Bent wrist problem

Strokes and Technique

Hello,

I have a wrist problem.

Whenever Im playing forehand counterhit/topspin my wrist is bent down, plus im left handed so im adding a lot of sidespin to the ball  and Im having problems with playing down the line, it's just so unnatural to me and my wrist kinda hurts when trying to play the stroke down the line repeatedly.

Been training for two years, very actively, but my friends didnt tell me about my wrist. When I found out, I was like I can't be bothered, It's just ugly but I can't be bothered. I always hated counterhit, because i couldnt play it. But now, I realized the connections between my wrist and stroke problems. And even with the wrist bent, I still see the progress I made and Im very passionate for the game and I want to get rid of this problem, but I just dont know how. Today i tried holding my wrist with other hand when counterhitting and the contact felt very clean, it was actually very easy to play the stroke. But it will take months to learn it the right way. Do you have any tips?

Thanks

greetings from Czech republic

Hi Sebastian,

I think this is a worthwhile thing to work on.  You will find you will be able to do a lot more with a straight wrist.

I think the first thing to do is relax your wrist.  Your bent wrist is actually an unnatural position and will be putting more strain on your wrist.

I would start by doing a lot of down the line counterhitting while focusing on keeping the wrist straight an relaxed.

It may take some time, but you will find the game becomes a lot more simple when you achieve this.

Have the same problem sometimes with shakehand.  Give penhold a try.  It feels very comfortable for looping and bending wrist

haha impossible, i think its the penhold that made me play shakehand like a donkey and my coach will never allow it. :D

Ha.  There's only one other penhold player at my club.  It defintally is decreasing in popularity.  I was even thinking about switching to shakehand but probably not
