Hi there. Love your videos and tips.

My name is eddy

My question is on chopping. How to do a really good chop during a game and on a serve. Because when I try to do it, its long and doesnt have enough backspin so its topspinned without a problem.

And I always give a really high chop when I try to chop against a serve. Do I chop when the ball lands on the table?

And chopping during a rally. If the opponent hits the net and still bounces on my side and goes long. I'm not fast enough to get to position to try to topspin so I try to do a defence chop but that rather goes left, right or net or too long.

Please help.!!

Thanks and keep up the videos please

Hi Eddy,

The key to getting a good chop is to be able to brush the ball fast and by just touching it.  If you contact the ball too flat the ball will fly off long.  If you don't get enough speed on the contact you will not get enough spin.

It may look like an easy shot but it is quite difficult to get right because you are hitting the ball very fast and very fine.  This is a difficult skill.

If the ball hits the net during a rally the biggest thing is to keep relaxed.  Most players tighten up which results in their hand getting too tight which means they don't have as much feel or touch which is really important for chopping or pushing.

When you are practicing your chopping or pushing, start by hitting as few gently without n=much spin and then progress to getting more and more spin with a relaxes hand and getting a good brushing contact on the ball.

Thanks pingskills for the advice.. I will try that in my next practice session.

I have another chopping question.

You know the defence player from Korea or South Korea. Who only does really heavy chopping against a forehand/backspin topsin.

Im wondering how he does he do that.?

Hi Eddy,

Joo Se Hyuk is exceptional in what he does.  That comes with a lot of practice of the chopping stroke.  He is not doing anything different to what we show in our lesson on the Backhand Chop and Forehand Chop, he just does it very very well.
