Strokes and Technique
Hi Alois,
I was playing table tennis today as I noticed I cannot put the ball short on the table.
Means I can return the ball short at the first ball after that as the rally continues I beat smash and my opponent just keep on looping.
I saw in a video that we can give a drop shot but I am seeing that if I touch the ball also the ball is going long and therefore the opponent is again able to return.
Need your help.
Hi Kiteretsu,
It is difficult to hit the ball short off a long ball. If it is short then you need to have a relaxed hand and not much forward movement at all with your hand. Let the ball almost just hit your bat without doing anything and it will have enough momentum to go back short on the other side. Also think about aiming very low over the net.
This is an important part of the game to ensure that your opponent doesn't get the first attack in the rally.

But as I keep on smashing and he is the one who goes too back from the table and keeps on looping until I make a mistake.
I saw in some matches that some players push the player back by hitting smashes after smashes but then puts a short ball which the player is not able to defeat as the second tip is on the table only.
But as I try to imitate it I see that after pushing the player far from the table with my smashes even if I touch the ball very lightly the speed of the ball pushes it long so the player again does a wobbly shot.
If I could have done a stroke like that!!

Take a look at this lesson on the Drop Shot off a Lob.

As my opponents loops, all the time the ball comes deep into the table only therefore I need to learn that stroke.
This video says that it is difficult to make a drop shot when the ball is deep inside the table but it is not told that it is impossible.
So please tell me how to make the drop shot when the ball is deep in the table.
thanks

You should wait till the ball is shorter. If the ball is deep keep attacking it.
