Strokes
Dear Alois
A coach suggested to me that my power shots (against long balls) would benefit from tensing the forearm muscles just before contact with the ball. In practice, this technique worked very well for me (though my forearm felt sore later!). However, others have said it is best to have a relaxed arm without any muscular tension. Can these apparently different views be reconciled ? What would you recommend?
Thanks
Ian
Hi Ian,
I am with the no tension school. Your arm actually moves faster when your forearm is relaxed. This allows then to perform naturally rather than your conscious self taking over and trying to make something happen. The reason for the soreness is that your muscles are fighting against each other and working twice as hard for the same result.
I say, relaxed is the way to go.
