Hello.

I have finally moved on from using a plain topspin serve, and started practicing a variety of serves with different types of spin.

I play with a friend of mine, who is very good at consistency with returning the ball. However, i was wondering if i can attack his serve.

His serve is a plain topspin serve, that you guys said we shouldn't be using.

Any advice on attacking this serve?

Thank you!

Hi Christian,

Well done firstly on making the changes to your serves.

So if your friend is doing plain topspin serves you need to be in a good ready position and realise that the serve will come long to either side.  Think about playing a basic topspin stroke off the serve.  The hardest part is watching the ball well to see which side it is coming to.  Once you do that you will be able to make effective topspin returns.

Thank you for replying!

One more question, can you please elaborate on the Backspin Reverse Pendulum serve? Im not really understanding how the contact of the ball on the bat should be.

Either i generate backspin, but the ball doesnt go anywhere, or the ball flies off the end of the table.

Getting the contact just right is difficult.  The balance between the fine contact and enough contact to get the ball over the net.  Try to get the contact near the front edge of the bat as it is coming through.
