About the Ceiling

About the Ceiling Asked 15 years ago

Hi Coach,

In the place where I play table tennis, when the ball hits the ceiling, even if it hits the opponent side, and then go out off the table, they say that its an opponent point, because the ball cannot hit the ceiling.

Is it true????

Hi Francesco,

It is true.  As soon as the ball hits anything except the table or net, it is out of play and you lose the point.

Why it's not a let? Shouldn't the room has a higher ceiling?

In international tournaments there is a minimum height of the roof.  However in most cases we just have to adjust to the conditions.

If it were a let, anyone about to lose the point could just smash the ball up to the ceiling and get a second chance.

Low ceilings are a handicap for lobbing defenders, just as a short court where you cannot go back enough.

Better be a blocker, stuck to the table and taking every ball at the bounce! :o)
