Anticipating Long-and-Fast Serve

Hi, coach.

I have a problem dealing against fast serve, especially when my opponent serve either from his forehand / backhand corner. If I stay in the middle, I can't reach my FH/BH corner. If I anticipate my BH corner (stand a little bit more to my BH corner), he will place his serve in my FH corner, and vice versa.

What should I do?

Hi Erriza,

You need to get really good focus on the ball.  As soon as they have the ball in their hand, get good focus on it.  If you do this you will give yourself the best chance to return the ball.

The more you do this, the better you will get at reacting to where the ball is coming.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
