Strokes
Hi,
In the video demonstrated by Jeff regarding the backhand block, the racket head is relatively upwards, but I find it easier to block topspins with the racket head a bit tilted sideways. What is the correct way? Or does it vary from player to player?
Thanks
Arnab
P.S. What is the mirror effect? I am not sure but I think there is a term in blocking known as the mirror effect. Can you please explain?
Hi Arnab,
This is a bit of personal preference. I quite like having the bat sideways too because I feel it allows you more freedom to attack the slower ball when you get the chance.
Having the bat up does allow you to have a more solid block because there are less moving parts. I think the mirror effect is having the bat up like you are looking in a mirror.
How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
