Hi Bhavaan,
It is possible to get spin with a short action on your backhand topspin because you can use your wrist to generate the spin.
It is a little easier to use your wrist on the backhand topspin than on the forehand because of the way the wrist moves. You can hit the ball on the top of the bounce if you want to generate the most speed as well. You can also hit the ball earlier or later as well if it is just spin you are after.
The contact on your bat can be towards the leading edge of the bat so that the ball is getting the most time on your rubber.
Take a look at the lesson on the Backhand Topspin to get the basic action correct. Then shorten it by getting rid of the upper arm action and limiting your forearm action and using a lot of wrist. You do have to make sure the swing is going in one direction though. Don't let the swing flap around.
Question actions
Most players are told to always return to the ready position after every stroke but that might be hurting your game. In this video, we reveal a smarter way to recover:
✔ Track the ball immediately after your shot
✔ Move your racket into position for the next shot instead of blindly resetting
✔ Improve your timing, balance, and flow during rallies
Whether you’re a beginner or advanced player, understanding this subtle change can have a big impact on your consistency and speed around the table.
