Any idea how I can ever get a backhand on?

Hi Phil,

The key to a good backhand like anything else is good technique and lots of practice. Have a look at the Online lessons especially the one on the
Backhand Counterhit.

I could also recommend a coach in your area Jenny Langridge as she has very good Backhand technique.
