Footwork
Hi, coach!
I understand why I don't want to move during the game. When I try to move more I lose balance. How to train alone to solve this problem?
Hi Ardak,
Losing balance can definitely make it tough to move effectively during a game. It’s great that you’ve identified this as an area for improvement. Improving your balance and footwork can be done even when training alone. Here are a few tips and exercises you can try:
1. Footwork Drills: Start with basic side-to-side and in-and-out footwork drills. Use a ladder or tape on the floor to guide your movements. Focus on maintaining a low centre of gravity and keeping your feet at least shoulder-width apart. This helps in maintaining balance.
2. Shadow Playing: Without the ball, simulate table tennis strokes and move as if you were playing a match. This helps in building muscle memory for movements specific to table tennis.
3. Balance Exercises: Incorporate general balance exercises into your routine. Activities like standing on one leg, using a balance board, or performing yoga can significantly improve your balance.
4. Core Strengthening: A strong core is vital for maintaining balance. Exercises like planks, sit-ups, and other core workouts can be very beneficial.
5. Use of Video: Record yourself while performing footwork or playing. Watching the playback can reveal a lot about your balance and body position.
6. Incremental Speed Increases: Start your movements slowly to ensure you’re doing them correctly with good balance, then gradually increase your speed while maintaining control.
