Table Tennis Strokes and Technique

Hi Coach,

I play table tennis for recreation purpose, once or twice a week. For my level I am not bad, as people said. But I never had any proper coaching, mainly learnt from watching others, video, TV or recently youtube etc. Before I had a problem with my forehand, I could not do the simple no-spin (almost) forehand drive, I always had to let the ball slightly drop and use top-spin drive. I repaired it. But recently it came back again. After 30-40 mins of practice (and feeling irritated about it) it sometimes comes back, but again the next day it is same. Seems I am droping my wrist early. Or is it psychological I am not sure. Just don't feel the same kind of confidence when I stand in front of the table anymore. More anxious than excited to play my favorite sport. Could you suggest anything? I understand that my question is difficult to have a proper answer, and I am not a beginner, just my timing has gone. I will be grateful if you tell me how can I overcome this frustrating problem.

Best regards,

Deb (Japan)

Hi Deb,

I think the best way out of these sort of problems is to go one step back.  Make the stroke really simple, even if it feels too simple.  Get your confidence back by hitting the ball on the table a lot of times with a super basic stroke, until you feel you can step up.  Go up in gradual steps.

Often these sorts of stroke problems come from tension in the arm.  Think about the movement of the stroke only.  Reward yourself if you get the arm to move through the stroke correctly.  Try (as hard as it is) to not focus on where the ball is going, but only on the movement of your arm.  If you get this correct, the rest will follow.
