I have just recently joined a club but players of my age are of very high level and to be selected for a tournament I have to defeat them. So my question is how to become better in short period of time?

Hi Nikhil,

Congratulations on joining a club. This is a big step and will really help you to take your game to the next level.

Unfortunately there are no real short cuts to improving. You have to put in good quality training time to improve your game. So if you want to become good in a short period of time, you need to train more over that period! And not just train, but train with intensity and focus.

Having said that, there are a few areas of table tennis that are really important and improving these areas can have a big impact on your overall game. I would recommend that you spend some time improving your serve. This can help you win a few cheap points and set you up in the rally on other points. The return is another really big area of table tennis where you can make big improvements. By learning to attack long serves, you can put your opponent under pressure and force them to be concerned with their own serve.

So in summary, be patient and although it may take you a while, being around better players will help you to get better.

#3 - Consistent Combinations

In this session we focus on your consistency when playing combinations of backhands and forehands. Several routines in this training session make you constantly switch between a backhand and a forehand. If you can improve your consistency on these combinations it will really help you in a real game since your opponent will often be changing where they hit the ball.

A coach who can see your particular weaknesses may be willing to advise you on what will make the biggest improvement to your game in the short term if you ask specifically for that. Otherwise they are more likely to begin building your skills in the fundamentals.
