Strokes
I have been playing table tennis for about 3 months now and I have fallen in love with the sport. However, I would like to learn how to play the sport at a competitive level but I'm afraid there is not place near to where I live to learn. I wanted to know what are some methods for me to learn how to improve my game. As of right now, I'm still at basics and I have not really understood how to create spins. Any help would be great. Thanks!
Hi Rachel,
Firstly welcome to the great game.
It is important to stay with the basic strokes and keep working on them. Creating spin is an interesting step. The main thing fo this is to understand the concept of brushing the ball on contact. If you can master this then you will start to be able to create spin.
We have a DVD on Serving which is all about creating spin. Al some stage you may want to get a copy of this. It will help you with the principles and get you on your way.
So, stick with the basic strokes and work hard at improving them. Then think about spin and serving.
The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
