Rules
Let's say I served to you, and it's coming at you now. Can I shout or make any loud alarming sound to put you off and mess up? And I probably already know the answer, but can I throw stuff at the opponent's face (I saw someone launch a donkey sweat sponge in a competitive game and he still got a point)?
You're right to suspect the answer already — both shouting to distract and throwing objects at your opponent are not allowed under the rules of table tennis.
Here’s how it breaks down under the official ITTF rules:
Rule 3.5.1.3 (Conduct) says that players must not distract their opponents during a rally.
Making a loud shout intended to distract your opponent during their shot (like yelling just as they hit) would be considered unsporting behavior.
The umpire can penalise this with a warning, a point penalty, or even disqualification if it continues.
So — you can “cho” after you win a point, or shout in celebration, but not during your opponent’s shot or when they’re about to hit.
In this video we explain what happens when someone hits the ball before it bounces in a rally. This is also known as hitting the ball on the full. The point stop immediately when this happens but who's point is it? This depends on where the ball was hit. Watch the video to find out more.
