I started playing TT with a penhold grip and now find my backhand very restricted and find it difficult to change to the shakehand grip. How can I change and what would you suggest I do. Thank you!

Hi Syed,

If you haven't been playing for too many years you can think about changing your grip.  The main thing you will need to work on is your backhand technique.  Take a look at our lessons on the Backhand Counterhit.

The backhand is the main difference between the grips.  Once you make up your mind stay with the grip and focus on improvement.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
