I have been playing for many years, but I am a recreational player.  I would like to up my game, and I wondered if I should get a paddle with one smooth side and one side with exposed pips.  Would you please explain the advantages and disadvantages of this choice?

Also, any recommendations for a paddle?  I wouldn't mind having one made to order, but I wouldn't know where to start.

Thank you,

Susan

Hi Susan,

It's great to hear that you're looking to up your game in table tennis.

Using a paddle with one smooth side and one side with pips (often referred to as a combination racket) can offer some interesting advantages and pose some unique challenges.

The smooth side (usually with inverted rubber) is excellent for generating spin and offers more control and speed. This side is ideal for offensive shots and serves where spin is crucial.

The pips-out side is less about spin and more about speed and unpredictability. The pips can help in defensive play by neutralizing the opponent's spin and creating flat, fast returns that can disrupt an opponent's rhythm.

Switching between the two different sides during a match requires a good amount of skill and awareness. It might be challenging to master, especially during fast exchanges.

As the feel between the two sides is drastically different, it can affect your consistency. It might take some time to get used to the change in bounce and spin with each switch.

As for recommendations, having a custom-made paddle can certainly be a great choice as it will be tailored to your specific playing style.

Here are a few steps to consider if you decide to go this route.  Determine whether you are more offensive or defensive, and think about what aspects of your game you want to enhance or what weaknesses you might want to cover.  The blade acts as the soul of your paddle. Look for something that complements your playing style—whether you need more control, speed, or a balanced option.  Decide on the rubbers based on your assessment.  For pips, products like Butterfly Feint or TSP Curl can be looked into, depending on whether you want short or long pips and the degree of disruption or control you're aiming for.
