Strokes
Hey! how should I improve my chopping skills?
Hi Abdulwahab,
Chopping is a defensive stroke designed to return an opponent's spin-heavy shots with heavy backspin, often forcing them into making errors.
Choose a racket with a high control rating and pips-out or long-pips rubber if you want to focus on defensive chopping. This equipment helps to enhance backspin and control.
Then take a look at your technique. Have a look at the tutorial on the Backhand Chop and the Forehand Chop.
For chopping, you'll want a lower center of gravity than normal. Keep your knees slightly bent and your body weight forward.
Position yourself a bit further back from the table than you would for a typical forehand or backhand stroke. This gives you more time to react to your opponent's shots.
The humble push does not sound like an exciting stroke but it is one of the most important shots in Table Tennis. Having a great short push can be the difference between being an average player and being a great player. Make sure you allocate the appropriate amount of practice to mastering the push.
