Hi Stephen,
Great to hear from you again and fantastic to know you're considering coaching as a career path. Becoming a table tennis coach can be a fulfilling job, whether full-time or as a side gig. You certainly don’t need to be a former professional player to become a good coach, though having a strong understanding of the game and some playing experience is beneficial. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:
1. Gain Experience: Keep playing the game regularly and understanding its nuances. Keep playing in a local club to gain both playing experience and insights into coaching by observing how others coach.
2. Coaching Qualifications: In Australia, it's beneficial to get certified through Table Tennis Australia’s coaching accreditation program. This program will equip you with the foundational skills in coaching and also ensure you are up-to-date with modern coaching techniques. Check out the Table Tennis Australia website for more information on coaching courses.
3. Volunteer: Initially, you might want to volunteer your time as a coach at local clubs, schools, or community centres. This is a great way to gain valuable experience, build your resume, and make connections within the table tennis community.
4. Develop a Coaching Philosophy: As you gain experience, start thinking about your coaching style and philosophy. What are the key skills and values you want to impart to your players?
5. Start Small: You might start working part-time or casually, which can indeed be a side job initially. Many coaches begin this way and gradually transition to full-time as they build a client base and gain further qualifications.
6. Continuous Learning: The best coaches never stop learning. Attend workshops, seminars, and further courses to keep your skills sharp and your knowledge current.
Regarding income, like many coaching roles, earnings can vary widely based on factors like location, experience, and the number of clients. While it may start as a side job, with dedication and networking, it can certainly turn into a full-time role. Remember, every top coach started somewhere. With passion and perseverance, you can definitely make a successful career out of coaching table tennis.
