Correct timing - when pushing heavy backspin

Hi Alois,

I have the problem when to push heavy backspin. I think I know (in theory) the correct stroke(hand relaxed, face of the bat up, brush with a slight contact), but I ask myself when to take the ball. Just of the bounce(when the backspin rotation of the ball is most), at the top of the bounce(when the ball is highest) or after the top when the ball is descending(when the rotation is less)?

In our weekly training session I always try to push chops. I´m trying each variation, but my problem is still consistency. So, what is the correct timing to push (early, on top, or later)?

Thank you

Jürgen

Hi Jürgen,

I find it easiest to make an effective push by getting it close to the bounce because you are closer to the net.  This will make it easier to get the ball short back on the other side and will give your opponent less time to react.

However if you are focusing on just getting the ball back, then it is easier to hit the ball later because as you said the ball will have less spin.

Hi Alois,

thank you for the quick answer.

However I have more problems to take the ball late. The ball has less spin, but these balls go often into the net, when I´m close to the net the ball is easiser to loop.

This was like a problem earlier... now I push the ball right at the moment it hits the table surface at the maximum backspin level. It seems the simple and effective way. Practice a bit more to gain accuracy. To me, this works !!!

Thanks, I think this is the solution.
