You need to think about what is your winning strokes. Then you need to find ways to get the rally to that type of stroke. For example if you like to use backhand topspin, then you need to find ways to get them to push the ball long to your backhand so that you can make it.
If you are better at counterhitting then you can keep counterhitting in the rally because that is how you are going to win points.
