Countering Sidespin-backspin chopper

Strategy

Hi everyone!

From starting table tennis to current day, my dad has always beaten me in table tennis because he always sidespin-backspin chops in both directions (we both play penhold, so wrist freedom lets us do so). Today, I tried receiving the chops like how I receive serves (angle the bat so that the ball goes where I want it to go). With effective placement, I was able to keep him moving around so that it's difficult to continue chopping. Besides that, is there a better way to counter this style, more preferably, offensively/aggressively? Thanks!

Hi Andy,

You could start to develop your topspin further to be able to topspin those sidespin backspin balls.  If you can play the Forehand Topspin Off Backspin then you will be able to adapt this to cope with the sidespin as well.  If you brush the ball finely and fast the sidespin will not have much effect.  This will overpower him so that he no longer will be able to do the sidespin backspin ball.

Serving longer and faster can also be useful if he doesn't attack much.  This will give you more time to see the defensive shot and also won't allow him as many angles from close to the net.

Thank you so much! I've never found a good counter to my dad's style. This helps a lot!
