Dear Alois,

I am wondering how can I return a heavy topspin tomahawk serve. In my club, there is a guy who always serve with a heavy topspin tomahawk serve and every time when I push it very firmly, it just bounce off the table.

Please help me

Jasper

Hi Jasper,

For a topspin serve you should play an attacking stroke rather than a push.  You don’t need to do much but play over the ball to make the return more easily.

Hi Alois,

I tried counterhit it and topspin it. It still gone into the net. But thanks for your comment

Hi Alois,

My father is a greater table tennis player than I am, but he suggested me to pull the ball up to generate mild backspin. Is this stroke ok?

Hi Jasper,

I am not sure what you mean but, if you are putting it up higher with backspin you may win some points against lower level players but as you play better players they will be able to put it away.

I mean dragging the ball up.

If the ball goes high I don’t think this is a good tactic against better players.

I used a counter hit and it worked!
