I love doing lobs myself, but how do i defend a lob that is hit at the end of the table and has very heavy sidespin where, when it lands, it shoot out in an odd direction.

Hi Jimmy,

The key is getting into a good position to make the smash.

You need to watch the ball in flight.  It will curve a little.  That will give you a clue as to where it is going after it bounces.  Then move your feet into position and wait for the ball to get into a comfortable hitting spot for you.  Then make your smash as normal.  If you hit it firmly the sidespin won't have an effect on your smash.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
