Hi,

I have some troubles with a player in my club.He uses long pips on his back hand.  When i chop the ball on his backhand he attacks with a loop movement.  I just don't understand what type of spin comes back? and what is the appropriate response?? a block? a block with open? or closed angle?

Hi Fabrice,

It will come back with a little topspin on it.  You can block it but you may need to go a bit more forward.  It won't have much speed on it and that is why you need to go more forward.

Take a look at this lesson on hitting the ball with long pimples which may help you to understand it. LP Attack Against Backspin.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
