Hi Alois,

A player in my club does a no spin serve.  I push it and he does me a topspin with a little topspin.  How can i avoid his topspin

Hi,

The best thing here would be to try the Forehand Flick stroke.  This will help you to keep the ball lower and also not give him an easy ball to topspin.

You could try pushing the ball but you need to make the stroke very vertical to stop the ball going too high.  If you find your push is going too high and you can't control it lower, you can then attempt to push the ball long and fast to the corners to make the topspin stroke a difficult one for him.

THere are three options to have a try at.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
