Hi Pingskills

My question today is i seem to do brilliant against blockers where i can relax and really look to get some heavy topspins in but against the attackers i seem to struggle to actually get in first with topspins as a result never seem to cause upsets in tournament and notice that i cross my legs wide to the forehand!!!!!!(trying to do cross step).i never used to do that causing me to be unbalanced and lose many points.

So any tips on being Getting in first and My footwork problem.

Thanks

Hi Cameron,

Different styles feel more comfortable than others for everyone.  It is just a matter of getting used to the others styles and finding strategies to cope with them.

To get in first, it is important to practice you short game.  Being able to serve the ball short and push the ball back short so that your opponent doesn't make the first attack.

If you take a look through our Match Strategy lessons you will find some helpful advice there.

This will also help with your balance because they will find it more difficult to give you a fast ball out wide that is forcing you to have to use the cross over footwork.

Playing short and low is the key.

Tactics Against a Good Short Pusher

Use a long push or a flick to open up the game against someone who is beating you at the short game. It might not be your favourite way to play but if you are losing the short game you need to mix things up. In the long run you certainly need to improve your own short game.
