they are both good, their approach is different, their playing style is different.
waldner is best blocker and ma long is best Chinese attacker.
there is no comparison between sun and moon, they both shines on their time.

I would say ma long just because he plays really fast

fast playing can't be a criterion of good playing. you can't judge the fish by judging its flying ability or a bird, by judging its swimimg ability.
both the player had ittf under 10 rank, though waldner couldn't be no. 1, ma long could. but under 10 rank is not a joke.

Impossible to really say who is best, Waldner in his time was almost unbeatable at his peak, same for Ma long also. Wouldn't like to live on the difference between them. Both are obviously are amongst the best players ever to have played the game.
