Drop Serves

Serving

Hi Alois, I have a special serve which I call "Drop Serve". The trick is to use the modified shakehand grip. You need to make a slight backspin and the ball must land very close to the net. But because of the backspin, it will bounce higher and go to the other side also closer to the net. The aim of that serve is to have the opponent make a fault called double bounce. Is my serve legal?

Hi Joshua,

Yes the serve is legal.  It can be a good tactic but as you get to a higher level you will find because the serve is going slowly your opponent will have time to get to it and even play a strong shot against it.  If it is working for you now against certain opponents then keep using it.

Just a lot of practice and getting more control on the spin and placement you are putting on the ball.  This will help you to get a more effective serve that your opponents will find harder to return.
