Dear Pingskill,

I play penhold inverted both sides and have been trying to mix FH & BH flicks along with pushes and dropshots in my short game.

The FH flicks, and especially the BH flicks, are great shots, but I'm still struggling with placement, consistency, and fast transition (backing up fast from over the table game out to mid-distance looping/counter looping game).

Would you recommend drills for:
1) Transitions between Serve & FH/BH Flicks
2) Transitions between
FH/BH flicks & 4th/5th ball attacks

Thanks!
Richard

Hi Richard,

I think multiball is a good way to start to train this.  Get your training partner to play one short ball  with backspin and then the next ball long and fast with topspin.  The movement is to get your right foot close to the short ball and then push really hard and fast with this foot to get yourself back into the ready position.

Then you can do this with one ball.  Simulate the situation of the rally you want.  Serve short, get your partner to push short and then you flick.  Your partner will then block the ball to one position to start with to get you used to moving out fast.  After a while you can get them to block the ball anywhere.  This will help you to track the ball as well as moving fast.
