Flicking Backspins

Hi coach, I have another question: After watching the Forehand Flick video, I realized that it is a great skill against my friend, who plays penhold style and always serve with short backspin.

If I am getting it correctly, when you flick a backspin ball, you hold the bat facing upwards before hitting it flat. What is the purpose of changing the angle of the bat if you are still hitting the ball flat?

Hi Aphrodite,

Your bat does come through quite flat but it is a little more open than if you are flicking topspin or sidspin serves.

The reason you start with a more open bat sis that when you coem through and turn your bat over the ball you are also generating some more racket head speed.
