Forehand Counterhit vs Topspin

Strokes

Hey PingSkills,

I'm learning how to play Table tennis, but it seems that i'm using the forehand counterhit instead of the forehand topspin. How do you know when to use either. And is there a way to fix myself from only using the forehand counterhit and focus more on using the forehand topspin?

Hi Lance,

The transition between the counterhit and topspin is not very big.  All yo need to do is get a bit more of a brushing contact on the ball initially.  I think in training start to use only topspins by focusing on the brushing action.

Don't get too worried if you are counterhitting a lot at the start.  I think it is a good grounding for the game and will teach you good control.  I would rather see a player using this stroke more that the topspin if you are missing topspins.  Control of the ball is a really important part of the game.

Relaxation: The Secret to More Power

In this video we show you a simple trick to improve your strokes by making them more economical. You'll notice increased power for less effort. When you tense your muscles too much you actually get less power and become more tired. However when you relax the opposite happens. It's why all the best players look like they are hitting the ball so hard without much effort.

Thank you,

I'll consider that during practice. its really hard some times because it feels like i brush it, but in reality it is a flat shot.

Thanks for the tip, I hope you have a great day.

You don't need to brush it much to start with.  Just keep working on it.  It will change.
