Hello, I have had any problems with warming up over the last few years of playing although suddenly one day I went to warm up and for the first minute i literally couldnt hit the table, my arm was not at all fluid and my motion was so bad that it would go straight up in the air and nowhere near the table. For the last few weeks I have been suffering from this, forehand takes 10 minutes to even become "decent".

It is proving to be a major problem for me. Any tips of how I can fix this or how this has suddenly happened?

Thanks

Hi Murray,

This must be a tension issue.  It is amazing what the mind can do.  Remember that your ability has not changed that quickly.

In training, spend a little bit of time really feeling the smoothness of the stroke.  If you have a problem doing it initially, then once you do get it right, spend 10 minutes just hitting slowly and really feeing what it feels like to hit the ball well.  It is just that you have started doubting yourself in this skill and then it becomes self fulfilling.

Spend time gaining confidence and trusting yourself in this stroke.

Could i also add a few thing:

-Im only 15 and have only been playing for a few years (2-4 days a week)

-It is only on the forehand

-It does seem to also be mental as if i try think of myself playing table tennis, i just cant imagine what i would make my arm do for the forehand stroke like I could before, before ive warmed up, then it is clear to me?

You could also try doing some mental imagery or some shadow swings (without the ball) and feel the smoothness of your stroke.
