Forehand Woes

Hey Alois, I was wondering what exactly the feet motion should be for forehand topspin shots. In the video, we can see Jeff having a slight jump right at the moment of contact with the ball. However, if I do this in a game or so, I find that I start jumping more and more with increasing speed and soon I'm off balance. If I keep my steady, I find it hard to involve my body in the shot. Any thoughts?

Hi Cihan,

I tend to like the stillness of the legs when you are actually hitting the ball.  This of course is in the ideal situation.  You get the movement through your upper body rotation.  Think of it like the legs are stable and quite square to the table, the upper body twists to generate the speed.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
