Hi. I watch the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFQBMNB_Rhs . In rally between 07:30 - 07:35 does Freitas do the Kenta Matsudaira's sidespin block or a flick?

Additional: Why the referee call Freitas in 06:33 ?

Hi Jason,

I would say this is sidespin block.

The umpire warns Freitas for not throwing the ball up straight.  The ball should be thrown up almost vertically according to the rules.

Although the umpire has warned him, Freitas keeps on throwing the ball up in a curve persistently.

I wonder why he gets away with this...

Cuz angles up to 45 degrees are allowed, if I recall correctly

Hm...the rule is:

"2.06.02 The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16cm after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck."

...and 45 degrees seems far from straight to me...

(I meant vertical when I wrote "straight")

The ITTF Handbook for Match Officials (http://www.ittf.com/URC/PDF/HMO_15th_edition.pdf) has on Page 14:

10.3 Throwing the Ball

10.3.1 The server is required to throw the ball “near vertically” upwards and it must rise at least 16 cm after leaving his or her hand. This means it must rise within a few degrees of the vertical, rather than within the angle of 45that was formerly specified, and that it must rise far enough for the umpire to be sure that it is thrown upwards and not sideways or diagonally.

If you go to the link you will see the diagrams mentioned below.

In Diagram 10.3.1.1 services B and C are acceptable, whilst A and D are not. The height of the toss is also a factor in determining whether the toss is near vertical. In Diagram 10.3.1.2 the ball is projected from, and struck at, the same place, but service A is a fault, whilst B is acceptable.
