Strategy
Hi Alois! I was just wondering, if you could take the time to write down what you think would be the best game plan for left-handed players, just like you and I.
If the opponent is a right-handed player whose serve is a long, heavy sidespin serve usually to your forehand, and his return is usually a backhand/forehand chop. What do you think is the best serve, the serve placement, return, return placement, tactic, mental strategy against this kind of opponent? Thank you for everything Coach.
Hi Rey,
This is a big area. This is something we will cover in our Match Strategy lessons down the track. But like for everyone, it is a matter of finding a particular area of weakness of each player whether they are left or right handed.
If he serves long to you then try to make a topspin into his middle area. This is a difficult spot for most defensive players.
For your own serve I would serve short so that he can't get a good swing at the ball. If he only chops and you like to topspin that ball then you can serve a long flat ball to him. You can also serve the ball into his middle so that he doesn't have as much space to swing at the ball.
You can also take a look at a previous blog about playing against a defensive player. Playing against Defenders.
Alois and Jeff commentate on the highlights from this round of 16 match between Nathan Van der Heiden and Eric Tan. Nathan Van der Heiden has excellent control and Eric Tan has excellent footwork. Who will prevail?
