Is there a correct way to hold your paddle.

Hi John,

There certainly is.  Take a look at our Lesson on the Grip on our Online Lessons Page of the website.  This will show you the two grips that you can user, the Shakehand Grip and the Penhold Grip.  Either are legitimate ways of holding the bat.

Your grip is a really important first step to learning.  Without a proper grip you will find it difficult to progress fast.
