High bouncing backspin

Strokes

Hi Alois/Jeff

Sometimes, the opponent, by mistake makes some backspin which is short and bounces high on my side of table.  Since this ball is inside the table, I could not make topspin by swinging the bat from knee high to head. So what can I do for returning such short and high backspins?

Regards

Bala

Hi Bala,

Try to move around the side of the table to get yourself closer to the ball.  This ball can be harder than it first looks and a lot of players make errors on it.

We have a video on this in our Ask the Coach Premium video responses. High backspin close to net.

I also have a problem with this one. I think I position myself well but either I aim for the endline and shoot all over or I aim halfway the table and shoot into the net.

Any magic trick on this?

No magic trick unfortunately.  I think one of the main things with this shot though is accepting that it is not simple and allowing yourself to adjust to the spin on the ball.
