Serving
Hi Alois and Jeff
I am a right handed player and I'm having a problem. When I serve a sidespin serve to some left handed players my opponent return in a fast and low backhand sidespin flick and I can't return it. What should I do? :-)
Hi Trevor,
The first thing is to try to stop them from playing that shot. Try serving to different positions or to a position that if they move to they will leave the table open for you. What type of serve are you doing to them?
The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.

i'm mainly doing sidespin serves which are about up to net height. Which serves do you recommend for this?
Hi Trevor, you can use any of the serves for sidespin. I think the easiest one is the Pendulum serve though. Each player will have a serve they like less. See whether they like the ball coming in towards them or away from them and to their forehand or backhand. I don't like the serve that swings into my forehand however I know other left handers that say they like the ball swinging that way.
