Hitting the top of the net

Strokes

I find myself hitting the top of the net a lot and usually the result is the ball goes off the table and I lose the point. Very frustrating. I see a lot of players hit the net and it usually falls on the table. I think mine go out because I hit harder than they do. What do you recommend to rectify this? Concentrate more on hitting at the top of the bounce? Put more top spin? Ever run into this problem? Thanks for your input. Any insight would be appreciated!

Hi David,

I think adding more topspin is probably the easiest starting point to help this problem.  The extra topspin will give you a bigger margin over the net and still allow you to hit the ball fast.

Focus first on the making the contact slightly finer rather than flatter which will allow you to generate the topspin you are looking for.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
