Hooking while Looping

Strokes

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask some advice while looping a forehand. During practice and matches, I feel that instead of giving the ball straight topspin while looping, I give it some variation between sidespin and topspin. This I notice because my practice partner always has trouble blocking my loops because they go to the side when the ball hits his paddle. This becomes a more serious trouble when I am trying to loop an underpin ball. Sometimes the ball just ends up in the net spinning sideways instead of forward. If you could provide me with some advice on this, it would be awesome!

 Thanks for the time,

 Gus

Hi Gus,

This is something that you can fix. Focus on hitting the ball a little earlier, or more in front of your body.  The sidespin usually comes when you hit the ball too late.  Also on contact, make sure your wrist is straight.  YOu may need to get the feeling of pushing your wrist through a bit more rather than the end of your bat.

Experiment a bit with this.  See if you can even get the ball to curve the other way.  Just play around with your wrist position a bit till you get the feeling of what is happening between your wrist and the ball curving.

Take a look at our lesson on the Sidespin Forehand Topspin.  This may show you what you are doing.

Relaxation: The Secret to More Power

It's why all the best players look like they are hitting the ball so hard without much effort.
