Hi Andrew,
The principle for returning spin is to use your bat like a rudder. By doing this you will be able to steer the ball back on to the table.
If the ball wants to fly off to the right, you face your bat towards the left a little and vice versa. If the ball flies long then turn your bat down over the ball. If the ball wants to go into the net, then turn your bat back.
