How heavy should your bat be

I am wondering what should your bat weigh if it is ITTF approved for practising and training. My bat weighs about 183 grams. Is that normal?

Hi Didon,

It is only the rubbers that need to be ITTF approved not the blade (wood).    So the weight can vary quite a lot.  Your bat at 183g is quite normal.

Tone is in Your Fingers

There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!

There are very few rules regarding the blade. Weight is not one of them. Same for the rubbers, except that their total thickness is limited. Blades usually range approximatively from 65 to 100g, rubbers from 30 to 60g (I'm talking inverted rubbers with some sponge). So 183g is indeed quite average.

Weight has advantages (stability for blocks, power for flat hits) and drawbacks (agility, manoeuvrability for small fast shots like flicks, physically less demanding).
