Hi Chirag,

You can take a look at the tutorials in the Strokes & Techniques section on the Forehand Chop and the Backhand Chop for some good strategies to learn these strokes.

Gonna post in this thread instead of opening another one, as my problem is related:

i've been playing the modern defender style for some months now, and i've been having a blast. on the forehand i rarely chop, i either attack or hit the ball back from a low position, which works nicely.

on my long-pips backhand i chop. my problem is that i can not get enough backspin on the ball. i know that it depends a lot on how much topspin my opponent puts on the ball in the first place, but it seems like no matter what i do instead of reversing the spin with my chop motion i just remove all the spin. many people have problems with a slow ball without spin, which is nice, but really strong attackers will instantly make a killing shot.

so my question is: if you do not get enough spin with your chops, what should you focus on? angle of bat? speed? wrist movement?

i cant seem to figure it out on my own, please help

kind regards

Hi David,

Try to relax the wrist and brush downwards on the ball on contact.  Flick your wrist downwards as well to help with more spin.  You can almost go straight down with the stroke.  That little brushing action will help to get a bit more backspin on the ball.

Maybe something's wrong with your long pips. Do they have good spin reversal or are they grippy?

thanks for the response, i'll try that

also @marius, the pips should not be the problem, they're made for chopping away from the table
