Training and Drills
I just competed in the NCTTA yesterday where I had to play about 10 consecutive matches. In matches where I was tied 2-2 and by the end of the day, I was just way too tired out to play at my maximum skill level and it cost me a couple of matches. I was wondering what I can do to increase my stamina in table tennis?
Hi Gordon,
One way is to train for longer periods. This is one of the reasons that players train long hours in a day. It is difficult to replicate the time on the table and in a hall for tournaments though.
The fitter you are the better you will cope with the long day. To increase your aerobic capacity you can do things like long slow jogging, swimming, bike riding or any other activity that will keep your heart rate up for long periods of time.

Alois , are there some excercises to do apart from training long hours? , i mean , i have no partner , i got no table tennis at home to do taht, so i just can go running or fitness or going to a gym but perhaps you need special exercises to play table tennis.

Alright thanks, I usually tend to play table tennis around 2-5 hours a day for about 5 days a week. However, most of the people I practice with are not near the skill level of the people I played at the tournament so I usually don't have to move around quite as much. I really should start exercising again in other areas though to really get into shape.

For all-day tournaments, I find having a stash of healthy energy foods in my bag like bananas and health food bars can help with energy levels later in the day. I don't eat large amounts at once, don't want to feel full and sluggish, but nibble away at the snacks gradually. I'd stay away from those artificial energy boosting drinks with caffeine etc.
