How to initiate the attack

Strategy

I play with a friend whom I serve short backspin (as it is a serve which is difficult to attack) and he pushes the ball adding a little bit more backspin. The rally continues like this and the ball at any point remains short with lots of backspin. Can I initiate the attack in such a rally? How?

Hi Chandrachur,

Try to push a ball with less backspin and see if you can get them to hit the ball slightly higher.  Also move them around the table to try to get the weaker shot from them.  If they return the push slightly higher then that is your opportunity to make the attack.  If the ball remains short and low with good backspin then the Backhand Sidespin Flick is your best option.

How good is your friend? You could simply not serve short, or give him a surprise long push, preferably into his middle

I have a suggestion, try serving short heavy sidespin, either to the middle or slightly to his forehand side. The heavy sidespin usually will get you a long return to attack. The top Chinese players use it all the time. Then try using different variations.
