How to proceed with 52 Week Training Program

A friend and I recently started the 52 week training program, but we seem to have different ideas on how to proceed.

When we run into a drill that both of us obviously need to work on, I think we should focus on that drill before we proceed any further into other drills. However, my friend thinks that we should try to move forward and not get bogged down into a particular drill. He thinks we should come back to drills after we have gone through all 52 weeks. My worry is that we will be spreading ourselves thin and not really gain much if we do that; we will be jacks of all trades, but master of none. We only train for 2 days out of the week for 2 to 3 hours each session. To me, that's not much time in the week to work on a drill.

What do you think is the best approach?

Hi,

I think both approaches can work.  I think it is not too important to perfect each drill but if you can do the same session two or three times then you will consolidate the skills that you are working on.

We will often have different drills that are similar from week to week which can consolidate some skills as well.

If I may jump in, I think it depends on your initial skill level. If you're beginners, as the lessons increase in complexity and difficulty, you will probably execute the second half of the lessons rather poorly if you're not relatively comfortably capable of executing the first half. If you're experienced and more advanced players, you can probably skip the first lessons and focus on the more advanced ones.

To avoid getting bored doing the same session over and over again if you need it, you could alternate between 3-4 lessons from the same "expertise range". But it would probably be a waste of time doing random forehand and backhand topspin drills if you still have trouble making 3 forehand topspins in a row without any uncertainty.
