Sir i am having a major ongoing problem..i am an aspiring defense player and i've been trying real hard lately to become the best at it,but the problem im having is that during my practice sessions i'm pretty good at returning the ball by chopping but i am not able to apply the same thing during a match.  Its getting pretty difficult to use defense for a tournament match.

thanking you

Hi Sumanth,

Like with any skills in Table Tennis there are stages of learning the skill.  The initial stage will be where you learn how to do the skill in a training situation.  It then takes a while to be able to put that into a game situation.  It is a matter of practising the skill more repetitively first.  Then you need to practice the skill under more pressure, like in a practice match.  Then you will start to use it in some real matches where you don't feel the result will be changed if you use the stroke.  Then you will be able to use it in some tougher match situations in pressure situations.

It is a gradual process that will come with time.

Slow to Fast Progression

It's important to practice your shots slowly to get the correct technique. That will lead you to being able to hit the ball faster. You do need to practice these faster shots in training before using them in a match.
