Hi Ping Skills

My question is today how to improve my push i have decent push but remains a weakness of mine.  I noticed when i recently played in high standard  tournament against top players that their push was unbelievable.  The Length,Placement,Variation of spin and speed they generate is amazing.  I tried to Get in first by serving and Third balling but they seem to read the game so well e.g i serve-pivot to BH round and they push fast down the forehand or touch short then i decide to stay to BH and push deep and fast to the BH which i couldn't lift because of how heavy it was.As you probably guessed these player were far too good for me!!!.

I tried to vary the length and spin but seemed impossible.  So what is the key to a push And How would i master it .

P.S  i Have underestimated the push it can be a real weapon if used properly

Hi Cameron,

Yes the push is a vital part of the game and you are not the only one that underestimates it.

It is something that you should practice as a stroke during each session.  You can practice it just by pushing to each other or as part of a Match drill.  If your opponent is serving practice the push return and maybe even the next ball if they play it short again.

The push relies a lot on your touch.  This comes with hitting a lot of balls and understanding the small changes in spin on the ball.  Getting the angle of your racket correct relies on you reading accurately the type and amount of spin on the ball.

It is not an exciting stroke to practice but as you have said it is important.

In our Training Secrets lessons we show you a few ways to practice this in drills.
